Art-Up Weekend is a live, 48-hour art-a-thon powered entirely by creators and leaders like you. We're currently recruiting our core leadership team and weekend support crew to launch Southwest Detroit's most exciting art and storytelling event of the year.
Art-Up Weekend is hosted in partnership with Garage Cultural. All operations are mission-driven and community-focused.
Commitment: Long-Term Builder (June – October 2026)
Time Investment: Up to 5 hours per week
Core Focus: Strategic planning, project management, and execution
Location: Flexible (In-person & remote-eligible roles)
Best For: Organizers, coordinators, and portfolio-builders
Commitement: Event Attendance (October 9–11, 2026) and Training Day (TBD)
Time Investment: Single or multiple 4-hour shifts (Max 4 hours per shift)
Core Focus: On-site logistics, artist care, runner support, and setup
Location: The Deep End Cafe & Gallery, Southwest Detroit
Best For: Art lovers, students, and community champions
The Mission: Build the public face, voice, and hype of the event.
Core Responsibilities:
Manage and update the event website (artupweekend.org).
Design and execute localized social media campaigns.
Draft and pitch our press/media kits to local blogs, radio, and papers.
Manage digital registrations (Eventbrite) and foster promotional partnerships with Detroit neighborhood organizations.
The Mission: Keep the physical gear moving and ensure safe, professional execution.
Core Responsibilities:
Coordinate physical rentals (easels, tents, tables) and spatial layout at the venue.
Manage food/hydration logistics for 15+ artists and staff over the 48 hours.
Organize the formal artist load-in/out schedules and secure liability waivers.
Source branded event swag (staff/volunteer T-shirts, stickers, posters).
The Mission: Align local business interests with grassroots cultural impact.
Core Responsibilities:
Draft corporate sponsorship decks and pitch local southwest Detroit businesses, restaurants, and cafes.
Cultivate relationships with neighborhood community groups for cross-promotion.
Manage post-event impact packages and deliver thank-you reports to sponsors.
The Mission: Power our multi-camera digital broadcast and venue digital infrastructure.
Core Responsibilities:
Coordinate the continuous livestream tech stack during the 48-hour sprint.
Direct hired or volunteer photographers and videographers on-site.
Set up venue Wi-Fi and power routing, and configure the Sunday auction POS checkout system.
The Mission: Curate the physical and visual atmosphere of the entire weekend.
Core Responsibilities:
Design interactive "Story Stations" (typewriter setup, prompt cards, audio closets).
Design print assets (programs, banners, sponsor backdrops) and manage the T-shirt contest.
Compile, design, and layout the final "Digital Storybook" PDF in October.
The Mission: Recruit, schedule, and champion our day-of army.
Core Responsibilities:
Lead recruitment efforts for Weekend Crew starting in August.
Draft the "Volunteer Onboarding Packet & Cheat Sheet."
Build and manage shifting rosters for the 48-hour event.
Direct volunteer operations on-site and coordinate volunteer thank-you initiatives.
The Mission: Capture the qualitative and quantitative data that proves our success.
Core Responsibilities:
Design and manage digital/physical survey collection during the Sunday Block Party.
Manage incentives (exchanging survey completions for free stickers or pins).
Compile raw data into a clean, visual impact report for sponsors and future grant applications.
Setup & Tear-Down Crew: Help transform the empty warehouse space on Friday afternoon, tape down extension cords, organize artists' spaces, and erect signage. Help pack up and clean on Sunday evening.
Artist Runners: Act as dedicated assistants to our 5 working artists. Clean their brushes, grab them fresh water, fetch food/snacks, and safeguard their stations so they can focus on painting.
Guest Hosts & Greeters: Welcome attendees, manage the registration table, point people to the restrooms, and hand out printed event programs.
Story Station Guides: Guide visitors through an interactive storytelling exercises.
Auction Spotters: Hover near the bidding clipboards during Sunday's silent auction to playfully encourage bids, keep time, and guide winners to the checkout desk.
You're working directly to help finance local artists and document the history of Southwest Detroit. 100% of auction proceeds above baseline go directly to the creators.
